Fervente devozione e profondo raccoglimento passano attraverso gli intrecci polifonici messi sulla carta dal sacerdote e compositore di Avila alla fine del Cinquecento, in piena Controriforma. I testi dei responsori dell’Ufficio della Settimana Santa sono resi da Tomás Luís de Victoria in tutta la loro intensa espressività. Questi mottetti per coro a cappella rappresentano la mirabile sintesi tra la tradizione spagnola, di cui de Victoria era depositario, e la scuola romana, a cui si forma durante gli anni di noviziato sull’esempio dei Maestri di cappella attivi nella città papale.
