Film Scoring Intensive Program

Thursday June 16th, 6pm
Cinema Alessandro VII, Piazza dell’Abbadia, Siena

Siena, 14 June 2022The Accademia Chigiana, in collaboration with the Toscana Film Commission, a department of the Fondazione Sistema Toscana, presents the final evening of the first edition of the Film Scoring Intensive Program. On Thursday June 16th at 6pm at the Cinema Alessandro VII in Siena, the compositions, orchestrations and sound designs of 10 students participating in the international film scoring course which employed the latest in advanced technologies for sound applied to images, will be presented and awarded.

After three weeks of intense work with a faculty comprising some of the best teachers and professionals in the field, noted for their award winning careers and highly regarded on an international level, many coming from Hollywood, the young participants (professionals and students) will present to the public 10 video clips from major motion pictures, of about three minutes each, scored with a 42-piece symphonic orchestra, thanks to the collaboration with the ORT-Orchestra della Toscana. The tracks were professionally recorded at Teatro Verdi in Florence.

The students came from different countries, Norway, USA, Italy, Estonia and Australia, and they could have this opportunity, thanks to the new program at the Accademia Chigiana, to specialize their skillset with notable greats in music production for cinematographic arts: Patrick Kirst, Director of the Screen Scoring Program at the Thornton School of Music – University of Southern California, an integral part of the flourishing media industry in Los Angeles; Pete Anthony, orchestrator, arranger, and conductor in Los Angeles, with over 400 films and productions with the Hollywood greats to his name; Alessio Miraglia, producer, composer, and sound engineer, who has worked for international productions with Netflix and Disney; Marco Beltrami, American composer and conductor, author of soundtracks for TV and film; Lawrence Shragge, award winning author of over 165 soundtracks; Marco Streccioni, sound engineer and recording guru for large orchestras, historic collaborator of Ennio Morricone and the centro di produzione RAI in Rome and the Sofia Record Factory; and Tim Starnes, producer, editor, mixer and composer, who worked on Lord of the Rings and King Kong.

The Film Scoring Intensive Program is the first in a series of modules that make up the Accademia Chigiana’s new project “Sound and Image” and aim to launch new professional collaborations both in Italy and abroad. Particular thanks is given to the partners involved: Fondazione Sistema Toscana, with the Toscana Film Commission and Manifatture Digitali Cinema, the University of Southern California (Los Angeles), ORT-Orchestra della Toscana,  together with institutional partners, the Comune di Siena and the Fondazione Monte dei Paschi di Siena.

The coordination of the course is entrusted to Nicola Sani and Antonio Artese, Dean of the  Chigiana Global Academy Programs, who in reorganizing the course have taken into account an extensive benchmarking analysis on the principal courses offered by international accredited academic institutions and private entities, among them the Master’s degree program of the celebrated USC Thornton School of Music in Los Angeles, the Berklee College of Music in Boston, the New York University Steinhardt School of Music and the Royal College of Music in London.
